The July Archive is a public historical record, not a product built on your data. Reading, searching, and asking the Historian require no account, and we collect as little as the archive can function on.
What we collect
- Nothing that identifies you as a reader. We do not require an account, sell data, or run advertising or third-party tracking networks.
- Questions you ask the Historian are sent to our servers and to our language-model provider in order to answer them. Question text is not written to our application logs or analytics.
- Error reports. When something breaks, a technical report (page, browser, stack trace) goes to our error tracker so we can fix it. This runs on legitimate interest and carries no document text, query text, or account content.
- Staff accounts. Contributors, curators, and editors have accounts with an email address and a hashed password, and their editorial actions are recorded in an audit log.
Material held in the archive
The archive preserves primary sources — documents, photographs, broadcasts, and public social posts — from the July 2024 revolution. Some of that material names or depicts real people. Every record carries its provenance and attribution, sensitive material is gated, and nothing is published without editorial review.
If you are depicted or named in an archived source and want it reviewed, restricted, or removed, write to us and we will act on it. Requests are handled case by case, weighing the historical record against the risk to the person concerned.

Processors we rely on
The archive is hosted on cloud infrastructure and uses third-party services for storage, language models and embeddings, error tracking, and — with consent — analytics. They process data only to provide those services to us.
