36 Days of July: saluting the bravehearts
This document is a special archive from The Daily Star (Bangladesh) commemorating the July 2024 uprising that led to the fall of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after 15 years in power. It began as a student-led protest against Bangladesh's government job quota system but escalated into a nationwide mass movement against authoritarian rule, drawing in garment workers, teachers, doctors, and ordinary citizens across class and ideological lines. The archive covers three main phases: The Uprising (how protests spread, the role of women, social media, and ordinary citizens), State Violence (including security force crackdowns, live ammunition use, internet shutdowns, enforced disappearances, and evidence that Hasina personally ordered forces to open fire), and The Reckoning (Hasina's ouster on August 5, 2024, and the formation of an interim government under Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus). Investigations revealed that 95% of the 204 analyzed victims were killed by bullets, with 113 struck by live rounds primarily to the head, chest, and abdomen.
