Media Framing of the July 2024 Uprising in Bangladesh: Testing the Boundaries of Galtung’s Peace Journalism Model
This academic article, published in the International Journal of Peace and Conflict Research (2026), examines how eight major English-language Bangladeshi newspapers covered the July 2024 political uprising that resulted in Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation. Using quantitative content analysis of 98 news reports published between July 14 and August 14, 2024, the researchers apply Johan Galtung's Peace and War Journalism framework to evaluate media framing during the crisis. The study found that newspapers fell into three broad categories: The Daily Star and Dhaka Tribune leaned toward peace journalism, while Daily Sun, The Asian Age, New Age, and The Business Standard reflected war journalism traits. Notably, The Daily Observer and The Bangladesh Today could not be cleanly classified into either category, as they blended elements of both models — a pattern the authors call "mixed framing." The paper's central argument is that this hybrid reporting style challenges Galtung's traditional binary peace/war journalism model, and the authors call for an expanded framework that better accounts for this middle ground, particularly in the context of South Asian political conflict reporting.
