‘Hasina mastermind of July atrocities’

This August 5, 2026 article from The Daily Star (Bangladesh) reports that the Investigation Agency of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has submitted a probe report identifying deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as the "mastermind and superior commander" behind crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising, with former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun named as co-accused. The report brings five charges against Hasina, including incitement (after she publicly called student protesters "children of Razakars") and directly ordering state forces to use deadly weapons, helicopters, drones, and armored vehicles against protesters — supported by recorded phone conversations. According to the report, more than 1,500 people were killed and over 25,000 wounded, with additional allegations including systematic violence against women and children, burning of bodies, and blocking medical treatment for injured protesters. ICT Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam stated that formal charges could be filed within two to three weeks, pending review of evidence, and noted the crimes are classified as crimes against humanity rather than genocide. Hasina is currently in India following the fall of her government, and this case is one of at least three she faces before the ICT.
